Bedfordshire Police has launched a new initiative aimed at tackling violence against women and girls during nights out.
Known as Project Vigilant, the scheme involves plain-clothed officers patrolling pubs, bars and nightclubs to identify individuals showing concerning behaviour before a sexual offence occurs. Once flagged, uniformed officers are then deployed to intervene where necessary.
The initiative is part of the force’s wider efforts to address male violence against women and girls, with a focus on preventing incidents and dealing with perpetrators directly.
Chief Inspector Mark Farrant said: “Tackling violence against women and girls is a key priority for our force and Project Vigilant is an important part of this, as everyone has a right to be safe whilst on a night out.
“We initially implemented Project Firefly a few years ago which has done a great job targeting perpetrators and protecting people in night-time hotspots. Project Vigilant aims to continue that good work.
“With a significant focus on targeting perpetrators, we remain committed to working with our partners to make Bedfordshire a safer place to go out at night.”
The scheme will run on a frequent basis with the support of local venues and partners, and is expected to become a regular feature in nightlife policing across the county.
