Rob Edwards says there has not been an approach by Southampton for James Bree, but says it wouldn’t surprise him because of the right back’s quality and his contract which will expire in the summer.
The defender had been linked with Premier League Fulham last week, but new transfer rumours have emerged of interest from Saints, now managed by former Hatters boss Nathan Jones.
While at Kenilworth Road, the Welshman spoke of his admiration for the former Aston Villa ace, saying he had Premier League quality.
Asked if any approach has been made by Saints for Bree, Luton boss Edwards said: “Nothing that I know of at the moment, but like I said before, nothing would surprise me because he’s a really good player and obviously he’ll be out of contract in the summer. But I don’t know, I’m not aware of anything at the moment.”
Asked if there was any premium placed on Luton stars should Jones bid for the services of his former players, Edwards said: “Not that I’m aware of.”
But with a contract expiring in the summer, Edwards knows that Bree could generate interest in this month’s transfer window.
He said: “With his situation, there’s always that possibility but what we’ll always do is try and make sure we do what’s right for the football club. And there’s an individual within that, a human being in that as well.
“If an opportunity for that person to be able to improve, kick on and go forward, and if it’s right for the football club, then we’ll always look at that.
“But there’s always a lot of parties involved in these things and it has to be right for everyone.”
Asked if there have been any conversations with Bree, Edwards said: “He knows what I think of him. I think he’s a top lad and a top player. Of course we’d love to keep him at this football club.”
