Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere believes a loan move to Dutch side SC Heerenveen can help striker Lasse Nordås rediscover confidence and momentum after an inconsistent first half of the season.

The 23-year-old completed a temporary switch earlier this week, with Wilshere making clear that regular football was the priority for a forward who found himself in and out of the matchday squad, but only managing three League One appearances since Wilshere’s arrival in Ocotber.

The Town boss said: “Lasse needs to play. Sometimes he was in the squad and sometimes he was out of the squad. He played a few games and we looked at it and thought that’s probably not the best thing for him. He needs to play and he needs to play consistently.”

Interest in Nordås came from both England and abroad, but Wilshere felt the opportunity to join a major club in a top-flight European league made the Heerenveen move the right one.

He said: “When you get an offer from a big club in a good league where he can develop, that’s something we considered. Hopefully he can score some goals, get a bit of confidence back and we’ll see a slightly different Lasse in the summer.”

Wilshere also confirmed that the striker was keen on the move, with his wishes taken into account during discussions.

He told LTFC+: “There was interest from England and from this league, but you have to listen to the player as well. Lasse wanted that move, so it’s a good one for him and hopefully he can come back in a better place.”

The manager stressed that the loan does not signal the end of Nordås’ future at Kenilworth Road, describing it instead as a necessary step at this stage of his development.

He said: “He was someone that we always considered and always thought about. But he’s at an age where he needs to play regularly. For a number nine to really perform, they probably need a run of games to find a goal and get going, and unfortunately he couldn’t get that here.”
