Luton are set to announce a squad of 22 players that want to keep, with manager Nathan Jones confirming that all of the club’s out of contract players have said they want to continue past Tuesday’s expiration date.
Danny Hylton, Luke Berry, Callum McManaman, Glen Rea, Elliot Lee and Marek Stech are the first-team stars whose contracts expire in five days, though the Championship season will run until the end of July after a three-month hiatus due to Coronavirus.
Those players will still be due severance pay for the month of July, but Jones said: “We will put a statement out confirming that everyone who is out of contract wants to contribute now and for the next month to Luton so that’s a real, real positive.
“It’s a good group, I knew it was, it’s an honest group, it is not a pretentious group, they want to be here and they want to be a Championship player here because they worked so hard to here.
“That didn’t surprise me in any way, I am delighted and it is a relief when they all say, ‘yes we want to move forward’.
“That’s a real big thing and we thank them for that. It will benefit them to be around and contribute as best as they can for this football club.”
Talking about the squad size he wants, Jones said: “We’re going to keep a group of 22 players here. It’s a tight knit group with everyone, some people will be disappointed because, with eight games in four weeks, not one player will be able to do 90 minutes for eight games.
“We’re going to need a squad, sometimes they drop in, sometimes they drop out but they have got to be ready, motivated to come in and physically, mentally and psychologically prepared to be ready to come and play.”
