Coach Chris Cohen says that ten more points from Luton’s remaining six Championship games should confirm the club’s place in the play-offs, if the last decade is anything to go by.
Only three of the last ten seasons has the benchmark for a top six finish been more than 75 points – and fourth-placed Town currently have 65.
First team coach Chris Cohen knows targets and tallies will fluctuate in the final four weeks of the campaign, but recent history does give an indication of what may get Luton over the line.
“If you look at the last ten years, we know that around 75 points, nine or eight years out of the last ten years, guarantees you to be there,” he exclusively told the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust podcast.
“The boys know that as well. It adds a little bit of pressure knowing we’ve got something to aim towards, but we’re not going into any of these challenges with fear. We’re going into them, A, with enjoyment and, B, to hopefully show the whole country, like we have all season, what a fantastic group of players we’ve got here.”
The Hatters’ next two games are against the sides directly above and below them in Huddersfield and Cohen’s former side Nottingham Forest, respectively.
But the assistant coach insisted it’s the eventual points tally, rather than who Town take them from, is what counts.
“People were saying that the QPR game was a six-pointer. It’s not really,” he said.
“We know we’ve got to collate a number of points that will almost definitely get us in the play-offs.
“If we do that, beating Peterborough and losing to Forest, it doesn’t really matter because everyone’s going to drop points.
“If we beat our rivals, obviously that’s a bit better but we’ve given ourselves a target to hit and then the next six games will decide whether we’ll get there or not.”
Cohen also gave an insight into Town’s coaching set-up, which has this week seen Paul Hart move from first-team duties to take over as Academy Director after Andy Awford stepped down last week.
