Fans of psychedelic pop, shoegaze and atmospheric indie rock have the chance to catch an artist with a growing national reputation when Yumi and the Weather plays The Castle in Luton this Saturday.

The Brighton-based project, led by musician and producer Ruby Taylor, will headline a show organised by local DIY promoters Vandalism Begins at Home, with support from Golden Toad and Peachstone.

Yumi and the Weather has spent more than a decade developing a distinctive sound that combines infectious pop melodies with hazy guitars, shimmering electronics and psychedelic textures. The result moves between dreamy, atmospheric passages and fuzzier, more forceful alternative rock.

Since emerging with the acclaimed All We Can EP in 2013, Taylor has attracted support from BBC Radio 6 Music presenters including Lauren Laverne and Guy Garvey, as well as Radio X’s John Kennedy. Her music has also featured in the BBC drama Normal People, while the project’s live appearances have included festivals such as Green Man, Shambala, Kendal Calling and Y Not Festival.

The project has also maintained an independent streak, with Taylor releasing music through her own MIOHMI Records imprint. Her second album, It’s All In My Head, released in 2022, explored personal experiences of mental health, relationships and loneliness, transforming difficult experiences into a collection of alternative pop and rock songs.

For Luton audiences, Saturday’s show offers a chance to experience an artist whose music draws on several strands of the alternative scene without settling into one genre. Fans of dreamy indie pop will find plenty to enjoy, but the heavier guitar work and electronic undercurrents give the songs a sharper edge.

The gig continues Vandalism Begins at Home’s work bringing touring alternative artists to The Castle, which has established itself as a key home for independent live music in Luton. The collective regularly pairs visiting acts with local and regional artists, giving audiences opportunities to discover new music in an intimate setting.

Support comes from Golden Toad and Peachstone, completing a bill for fans looking for something beyond the usual Saturday night soundtrack.

Yumi and the Weather plays The Castle on Saturday, October 24. The advertised show runs from 8pm to 11pm.
