A student-run radio station in Luton is celebrating a major national success after picking up seven awards at this year’s Student Radio Association Amplify Awards.
Radio LaB, based at the University of Bedfordshire, took home two Gold, two Silver and three Bronze prizes, marking one of its strongest performances to date and reinforcing its reputation as one of the UK’s leading student stations.
The two Gold awards were among the standout moments of the night. One was awarded for Student Radio Moment of the Year for “Destination No.1”, a multi-platform project built around hosting the National Student Radio Chart, which saw students create a clue-led narrative while travelling across Luton.
The second Gold recognised the “EmpowerED: Success for All” podcast, developed with the university’s student support team and focused on practical advice around issues including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety and visual impairment.
Alongside the top prizes, the station also secured Silver awards for its Residency DJ crash courses and for Most Supportive University or Students’ Union, awarded to Beds SU. Bronze awards went to Tyrese Charles for Most Committed Member, as well as for Black History Month programming and Best Station Culture.
Danielle Foley, a Radio & Audio student and one of the station’s student managers, said the recognition reflected the hard work of everyone involved.
“We work so hard every day to produce incredible content,” she said, adding: “It’s been an honour to have received so much external recognition this year. All the students at Radio LaB have ambition, drive and passion for what they do, so it’s amazing to see it pay off. While I may be graduating this year, I hope the station keeps improving and keeps smashing it!”
Radio LaB is a community station run by student volunteers at the university’s Luton campus, offering hands-on experience in broadcasting, production and media management using industry-standard facilities.
Terry Lee, senior tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of Radio LaB, said the range of awards highlighted the breadth of student work.
“These awards are a fantastic recognition of the creativity and commitment our students bring to their work,” he said. “What’s particularly encouraging is the range of projects recognised, from multi-platform storytelling to impactful support-led content, which reflects the strengths of the University of Bedfordshire’s Creative Industries provision. Our students develop industry-relevant skills and are producing externally validated media, making a real impact.”
The latest success continues a strong run for Radio LaB and reflects the university’s focus on giving students practical, real-world experience alongside their studies.
