Luton Town look set for a fresh transfer battle this summer as growing interest in Norwegian midfielder Thelo Aasgaard continues to build — with a leading Scottish broadcaster revealing that Rangers are now in discussions over a possible move.
STV presenter Raman Bhardwaj confirmed the Glasgow giants are targeting the 23-year-old, posting on social media: “Rangers are in discussions with Luton Town to sign Norwegian midfielder Thelo Aasgaard. Would be a permanent transfer. Deal not agreed yet.”
Reports north of the border have suggested a deal could be in the region of £5million for Aasgaard, who only arrived at Kenilworth Road in January from Wigan Athletic in a switch understood to be around £3million, though officially undisclosed.
Despite the club’s eventual relegation to League One, he impressed during the second half of the campaign — scoring twice in 17 appearances and emerging as a rare bright spot in a struggling Hatters side.
His performances also helped him earn a senior international debut in March, where he starred in Norway’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Moldova with both a goal and an assist. But his future at Luton has become more uncertain during the off season, as national team boss Ståle Solbakken made it clear that it will be difficult for him to pick Aasgaard for the 2026 World Cup if he stays in the third tier.
Speaking to Norwegian outlet VG earlier this summer, Aasgaard admitted his future was unresolved, saying: “It’s hard to say. It’s a difficult situation for the club. I felt I performed well in a difficult situation for the club. Everyone is on vacation now. I’m just focusing on the game on Friday. What I can say is that the World Championship in a year is a big goal for me.”
Rangers’ interest comes amid a wider reshuffle under new manager Russell Martin, who recently brought in Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell and is understood to be targeting more technically gifted players to suit his possession-based style.
With Luton already parting ways with Carlton Morris (Derby), Thomas Kaminski (Charlton) and Daiki Hashioka (Slavia Prague) this summer, another high-profile departure would be no surprise — though Town should be under no immediate financial pressure to sell, thanks in part to ongoing parachute payments.
