Luton Airport has raised more than £28,000 for charity so far this year, with the money set to help improve literacy and develop skills for young people in Luton and beyond.
The airport teamed up with the National Literacy Trust and Tokko Youth Hub earlier this year, and fundraising events have already broken records. The airport’s annual golf day brought in £24,000 — the highest total in its 12-year history — while the popular Runway Run returned for its sixth year, giving participants the chance to complete a pre-dawn run along the 1.3-mile runway and back.
Neil Thompson, Chief Operations Officer at Luton Airport, said: “London Luton Airport’s fundraising calendar is packed full of exciting opportunities for colleagues from across the airport to come together and support the work of our fantastic charity partners. LLA is committed to delivering significant and enduring social benefit, and our partnerships with National Literacy Trust and Tokko Youth Hub underline our focus on driving impactful education and skills development opportunities for young people in our local community and beyond.”
Hannah Marshall from the National Literacy Trust said the events were helping them reach more children, teenagers and families, adding: “Literacy changes everything — it opens doors to brighter futures, better opportunities and stronger communities.”
Tokko Youth Hub CEO Aimee Djengiz said the funds would “directly support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds engage with projects that develop their employability skills; helping break down the barriers to inclusion.”
The airport said its work with the two charities is part of a wider commitment to supporting Luton communities, which last year included £180,000 in donations to local projects and spending £110 million with businesses within 25 miles of the airport.
