Luton midfielder Ross Barkley has signed for Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee, with boss Rob Edwards saying “I’m sure everyone will understand the opportunity” to play Champions League football and that he’ll be back to watch the Watford derby.
The 30-year-old, who joined Town last August as a free agent, and made a big impact with Hatters fans in their debut Premier League campaign, had been heavily linked with a move back to Birmingham since relegation back to the Championship was confirmed, with reports of a £5million transfer fee.
Barkley joined Town after a season at Ligue 1 club Nice, having moved to France after a spell with Chelsea, which included a loan at Aston Villa in the 2020/21 campaign.
His performances for Luton, including five goals and six assists in 37 appearances, saw a debate rage over whether he is the best player ever to have pulled on a Hatters shirt, with chairman David Wilkinson agreeing on the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust Podcast.
Other fans were in the Ricky Hill camp but either way, Barkley’s season saw him win the Loyal Luton and Luton Town Supporters’ Trust’s Player of the Year awards.
Hatters boss Edwards told the club’s website: “We are disappointed to see Ross go, but we completely understand it and he leaves with our best wishes and thanks.
“It was great to work with him for a season. He was amazing, provided lots of good memories for us all and the supporters fell in love with him, but I’m sure everyone will understand the opportunity.
“Playing in the Premier League is important for Ross, as is Champions League football. He still wants to play for England and believes this gives him the best chance to do so.
“We’ve had a good chat and Ross has thanked me and the club. We are parting on good terms and you never know what the future holds, I’ve got to say that.
“He loves all of the supporters and he wants to come back to watch a game. He actually said, ‘I want to come back for the Watford derby!’
“So let’s give him a great reception when he does come back during the season. He’ll always be welcome.”
Barkley told Aston Villa’s website: “Playing in the Champions League is a big incentive for me and the club, so I’m looking forward to that.”
He added: “The last time I came, I didn’t play in front of the fans, so I’m looking forward to that.
“The atmosphere [at Villa Park] is great, so I’m looking forward to that as well as the Champions League nights. It’s been a long time since the club were in the Champions League, so it’s going to be a massive season.”
