Luton’s super middleweight Sam King battled through a nasty cut to claim a hard-earned points victory over Panama’s Omir Rodriguez at York Hall on Saturday night – then revealed he’s preparing for another big test at home, with his first child due any day.
The 24-year-old extended his unbeaten start in the professional ranks to 6-0-1 with a 59-56 decision in the six-round bout, televised live on Box Nation, after suffering a gash above his right eye in the third round. Fighting under
Frank Warren’s banner, King showed composure to start and finish strongly against a durable opponent who refused to fold.
“That was a tough fight,” King admitted to Box Nation afterwards. “I knew it was gonna be a tough fight. He’s had great fights with loads of top boys. I just wanted to get in there, be sensible, not have too much of a war. Doesn’t look like it, but we got the win – and it’s great.”
Rodriguez had pushed several British prospects close in recent outings, and King said he relished the step up in opposition.
“That’s what I want – step up, after step up, after step up,” he said. “What’s next for me in a minute? My missus is 37 weeks pregnant, so I’m having a baby any time now. I was a little bit stressed about that in the last couple of weeks – not stressed, but excited. That’s the next thing for me to focus on. But after that, maybe in the new year, a big title fight.”
King, who has been trains out of the Peacock Gym in Essex, said his priority now is rest and family before targeting belts in 2026.
“I want to rest up, have the baby – that’s a once in a lifetime experience,” he said. “Then push on for titles. That was a great fight, just felt like a learning experience. for that”
