New Luton Town signing Sverre Sandal says he was immediately drawn to the club’s story and insists he wants to play a full part in the Hatters’ rebuild after completing his move from Norwegian top-flight side KFUM.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who can operate across central midfield, admitted the interest from Luton made a big impression and says he is eager to prove himself in English football.
“I’m very excited. Ever since I heard about the interest I’ve been looking forward to coming over, signing for Luton Town and giving my all,” Sandal told LTFC+.
“Everyone in Norway knows Luton’s story, and when I look at my former club, we’ve had a similar rise to the top division unexpectedly. I understand it’s been a tough two years, but it seems like we are in the beginning of rebuilding and it’s something I want to be a part of.”
Sandal also pointed to the club’s supporters and identity as major factors behind his decision.
“I’ve seen that the fans are passionate and from what I’ve heard, Luton is a hard-working town, which is something that suits me well,” he said.
The 6ft 3ins Norway-born midfielder, who has an English mother and Norwegian father, was dubbed ‘Ekeberg’s Yaya Toure’ by TV pundits and describes himself as a proactive presence in the middle of the pitch.
Sandal said: “I like to bring the game up the field, play forwards, win my duels, work hard and help the team. I’m so eager to prove myself here and can’t wait to start training.”
Luton boss Jack Wilshere said of his second permanent new signing as a manager: “He’s a very talented midfielder who can play as a six or an eight, with the ability to start attacks from deep with his range of passing and ability to go past people.
“With his size and power, we think he’s going to suit English football well and we’re looking forward to seeing how he can help us progress as a team.”
Sandal leaves KFUM having made 108 appearances and scored ten goals across all competitions, earning praise in Norway for his all-round midfield displays. The Norwegian top flight season finished at the end of November, so the midfielder hasn’t played competitively in just over two months.
