Andrew Shinnie says getting another Scotland call-up would be ‘unbelievable’ but insists he’s happy playing for Luton.
The midfielder scored a stunning winner in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Huddersfield, which saw EFL highlights TV channel Quest call him Shinniesta – a nickname in reference to Barcelona legend Andrew Iniesta.
Club action is on hold now for the international break with Luton players Simon Sluga (Croatia), James Collins (Republic of Ireland and Luke Bolton (England Under-21s) all selected by their countries.
Shinnie, however, will have to watch from a distance as his native Scotland face Russia and Belgium at home in the Euro 2020 qualifiers this week and next.
The 30-year-old’s only senior international cap to date came in November 2012 during the Tartan Army’s 2-1 win over Luxembourg, but there’s no telling what a continued run in Town’s Championship team could do for reviving his prospects.
Shinnie said: “It’s obviously an honour if you ever get called up for your country. We’ve got a strong squad and really good midfield, it’s probably the strongest part of our team, so the boys are playing at a good level and I’m happy where I’m at right now. I’m happy playing my club football and I just enjoy playing.
“If I got called up it would be unbelievable for myself, for my family, but I’m just enjoying my club football and that’ll take care of itself.
“If I’m in it, I’m delighted, but if not I’ll get a few days off, so it’s win-win really.”
The Scottish squad does include former Luton full back Stephen O’Donnell, who now plays for Kilmarnock.
