Luton alt-rock heavyweights ScreamingMechanicalBrain have released an epic new video for their towering latest single, that’s oceanwide, hell deep and heaven high, standing as a bold new landmark in their sonic journey.
Titled ‘Some Of You Need To Go To Church, I Don’t Want You In Hell With Me’, the track, out now via the town’s Vandalism Begins at Home Records label, sees the quartet push their atmospheric sound further than ever before with a 13-minute voyage of introspection and catharsis.
Described by the band as a “statement of intent”, the single has already been turning heads at live shows where it’s taken pride of place as both opener and closer in SMB’s set. “Opening a 30-minute set with a 13-minute track is a very particular statement of intent, and one that suits us well,” says vocalist Nik Scott.
And now, the band have unveiled an apocalyptic video full of tsunami-sized waves and raging fires.
Formed in Luton, ScreamingMechanicalBrain have built a reputation for forging emotionally intense, musically ambitious soundscapes. Drawing influence from the likes of Tool, Deftones and Sleep Token, their latest offering takes that a step further.
“There are some bass effects on the track that were really the genesis of the song,” Scott explains of the single. “Rich [Davies – bassist] was messing about with pedals and happened to come up with something that the rest of us wouldn’t let him keep for himself!”
The track, produced by Tim Kramer, marks a clear evolution in the band’s process and Scott added: “Our working relationship with Tim has evolved to a point where getting everyone’s main takes down is a much quicker process. Which gives us a lot more time to add additional layers – this song has a lot more layers of guitar, bass, and vocals, all buried deep in the mix so that they add to the atmosphere without stealing the limelight.”
Lyrically, the song is a deeply personal reflection from Scott and he says “To put things politely, I struggle with people.
“I have to engage with people, because a life of solitude is too much for anyone, but I can get very ‘people’d’ out very quickly if I’m not careful. In the last few years, I’ve established a habit of disappearing once a year by myself for a week or more to walk the coastline, listen to music, read, and really gather my thoughts. This song is mostly a distillation of that process, that I wrote while on one of those trips. A conversation with myself about how it all makes me feel.”
The release of ‘Some Of You Need To Go To Church, I Don’t Want You In Hell With Me’ also signals the start of a new creative chapter for the band – one Scott refers to as “SMB Phase 2”.
“The most important distinction between phase one and phase two is the subtle shift in bass – all three of the 2024 singles were written while keV was still playing bass for the band, and then Rich reworked the bass parts to suit him before we recorded them. All 2025 singles are songs that we didn’t start until Rich was with us full time. Therefore, while the changes are possibly only noticeable to us, the songs have a slightly different feel to them.
“I’d also like to think that we’re being a little more ambitious with these 2025 songs. Again, probably in ways that only we can see, but each song we’re approaching differently to find new ways of making the songs larger, either in terms of soundscapes, layers, or evoking feelings.”
