Luton is marking Black History Month 2025 with a programme of events throughout October, celebrating the culture, legacy and achievements of the town’s Black African Caribbean (BAC) communities.
Organised by local community groups and individuals, this year’s line-up offers events from cultural exhibitions and historical talks to creative showcases, a meet the author event and a special tribute to the Windrush Generation.
Held every October, Black History Month is a time to reflect, honour and celebrate the contributions of Black communities in the UK. This year’s theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” recognises the strength, resilience and enduring influence of the global Black community.
Nominations have now also been opened for this year’s Unsung Black Heroes awards. Over 50 people have been recognised to date in the now annual event aiming to celebrate and widen knowledge and understanding of BAC communities’ contribution to Luton.
Residents are encouraged to nominate local individuals making a significant contribution to their community. This could be the local GP, community or church leader, the neighbour who helps everyone, or anyone who has gone above and beyond in their involvement in the community.
Councillor Javed Hussain, Deputy Leader of Luton Council, said: “Black History Month is a meaningful time to honour and celebrate the important contributions of Black communities. Here in Luton and throughout the UK it is also a chance to reflect on how we can use this month to inspire and uplift future generations.
“It’s fantastic to see the variety of events taking place across Luton with communities marking Black History Month in their own way. I encourage everyone to attend and take part, there’s so much to enjoy, learn from and be inspired by.”
Earlier this year, the council strengthened its commitment to tackling racism and promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion by signing UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter. This builds on the council’s 2021 cross-party Black Lives Matter motion, which committed to tackling racial inequalities and improving outcomes for Black residents in key areas such as employment, education, health, and justice.
Community leaders from the BAC community – who were instrumental in shaping this motion – continue to advise, support and challenge the council and its partners as this work progresses.
As part of this year’s Black History Month, Luton Council is also raising awareness of the Windrush Compensation Scheme and related support services.
