Sonny Bradley says he will leave Luton preaching positive messages about the club but admits the “mental and physical impact” of life off the pitch had affected his performance on it.
The club captain’s successful five-year spell at Kenilworth Road will come to an end when his contract expires at the end of the month, having been part of two promotion-winning squads.
Bradley had already announced his departure before the play-offs, which he didn’t feature in, though he did lift the Championship trophy at Wembley after the Hatters secured a place in the Premier League for the first time.
He has described that moment as one of the best of his career and the medal he received completed a hat-trick of promotions out of each Football League division.
However, Bradley’s final campaign as a Hatter was beset by injury, while in recent years he suffered the tragic early death of his 57-year-old dad, Ray, after a battle with Covid-19, with the disease also hitting him hard three times.
The centre half also suffered complications after double hernia surgery which saw him rushed to hospital for an emergency operation because his small intestine got stuck to the scarring from his operation.
“I’ve been here for five years and life goes on,” he said, adding: “Things happen that I couldn’t help, unfortunately, and at times, because of the mental and physical impact, the last couple of years, probably affected my performances a little bit, I could never get away from it.
“All I can say to the Hatters fans is that I’ve always, despite how I’m feeling mentally or physically, I’ve always tried to give 100 per cent, I hope they know that.
“I think it’s reflected in the way I train and the way I play, but that’s up to them to make their mind up.”
Since the announcement of his exit and since securing promotion, the tributes have poured in for Bradley who has been a leader for Luton since his arrival in League One from Plymouth Argyle.
And on Bank Holiday Monday he led the team for the last time as part of the victory parade through town which saw an estimated 20,000 Hatters line the streets to salute their heroes.
“I got a great reception,” Bradley said, adding: “In return I clapped every single fan that was there, so it’s hard to sum up, but (I’ve got) only positive thoughts as I move on.”
The 31-year-old leaves after 175 appearances and the early announcement of his departure also afforded him the opportunity to thank the Kenilworth Road crowd one last time after Town beat Sunderland in the play-off semi-final second leg last month.
“It’s been emotional,” he said of the climax to the campaign, adding: “I can’t really hide that fact, the past few weeks, knowing that no matter what happens, I’m not going to be here next season, it’s a strange feeling.
“But I’ve only ever wanted us to succeed. It doesn’t just benefit me as an individual, it benefits the whole team, benefits a lot of people, positive vibes, positive impact.
“I’m looking forward to coming back and watching Luton Town as a Premier League football club.”
He added: “Moving forward, even though I’m not going to be here, I’ll continue to preach the positive messages about this football club, because it truly is for me, the best decision I ever made coming here.”

Fantastic Man and Captain. Thank You for everything Sonny , you’re among the ranks of the legends of old now
Sonny is a great guy and true legend for Luton Town. I hope he finds peace in his future endeavours and the fans will always give him a good reception if he returns some day.
Completely agree. Led from the front every time he played. Never hid from his mistakes, never chastised his teammates for mistakes. Always tried his best and really epitomised everything right about our club on the rise back up the leagues. And always seemed like a really nice guy too. He’ll be well received whenever he’s back I’m sure!
