Stevenage 2 Luton 0: Defeat piles the pressure on Bloomfield

The curse of the third game of the week struck again for the Hatters as they were beaten 2-0 by the League 1 leaders Stevenage at the Lamex Stadium.

That is twice Town have lost the third game without scoring a goal, a worrying trend that has carried over from last term.

And Hatters travelling faithful expressed their anger at the end of the game, launching into songs aimed at the manager Matt Bloomfield and CEO Gary Sweet.

On the final whistle reaction, Bloomfield told the BBC: “I understand people’s frustrations and they’re entitled to voice them in the way they that see fit. There’s nothing I can say about that. I’m just trying to do my job to the best of my ability.”

Before it got to that, buoyed by a comeback in midweek and a win over Doncaster last Saturday, the Hatters boss made four changes to his starting line up for the contest, with those who impressed from the bench earning starting berths.

One of those in Jake Richards should have been the recipient of an assist five minutes into the game when he played Cohen Bramall, in a further forward left-wing role, clean through only for the recent recruit to fire wide when the target was at his mercy.

That was the only moment of quality in a first half which never got going, but it was Luton who came out stronger after the break and had Lasse Nordås scored from close range this could have been much different, however that is the byline of the last 12 months for the Hatters as an attacking force.

Having not made the most of their chances, Town were made to pay the price when Chem Campbell curled home after a weak Mads Andersen interception before Jordan Roberts slammed a strike in from the edge of the box with his first touch.

After mounting a comeback from 2-0 down at Blackpool in midweek there were no signs of a repeat as Stevenage saw the game out comfortably, in fact, they should have added a third late on when Jamie Reid burst through only to curl wide with the goal at his mercy.

With things flattering to deceive on the pitch and those on the terraces losing belief, this feels like a big fortnight before Luton are back in action when Mansfield are the visitors to Kenilworth Road.
