Luton’s trip to Stoke tomorrow will not go ahead after the Football League postponed all fixtures this weekend following the death of the Queen, despite government guidance that there is ‘no obligation’ to do so.
Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday (September 8) aged 96, after reigning for 70 years as the UK’s longest-serving monarch.
In a statement this morning (September 9), the EFL said: ‘Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the National Sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.’
The statement added: ‘Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course.’
The decision comes after government guidance advised that, ‘There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during theNational Touring period. This at the discretion of individual organisations.
‘As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. There are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of organisations.’
