Nathan Jones labelled Luton’s win at Swansea “utter perfection” as Harry Cornick’s first goal in three months put them within touching distance of the Championship play-offs and sent him bounding into the away end to celebrate with fans.
The match-winner, in only his second substitute’s cameo since a two-month spell out injured, was introduced just after the hour and nine minutes later he was sweeping fellow sub Cameron Jerome’s cross into the bottom corner.
“It was utter perfection,” Jones said, adding: “What a way to win a game. That’s what you have to have. You have to be disciplined. Cameron couldn’t really play again, so we had to have Danny and Fred up there.
“They toiled away, really worked hard in the first half and then we bring the game-changers on. It’s great to have Harry back. That’ll do him a world of good. It’s a magnificent away performance, it really is.”
He added: “The tactical awareness that we had today was wonderful. I thought we were strong, disciplined, aggressive and we looked a threat when we had chances.
“It’s magnificent really. Our game-changers came on and won us the game. It was a complete away performance. To come here and win is a wonderful result.”
The victory saw Jones leapfrog the advertising hoarding after the final whistle and jump into the away end, running up the steps to celebrate in front of the delirious travelling Hatters.
Jones said: “I was celebrating, really, because the fans were magnificent. They’ve travelled down here on a Tuesday night. It’s a massive journey so it’s just to replay a bit of that. But it’s a massive, massive result for us.”
And it was deserved as Town created the better chances in the first half, though Ben Cabango hit the post for the hosts and keeper James Shea – now firmly the number one ofter the transfer deadline day departure of Simon Sluga to Ludogorets – used his feet to keep out Michael Obafemi. That earned him his sixth clean sheet in 11 games.
At the other end, in his first Championship start for nearly a year, when he might have left Luton the day before, Danny Hylton almost marked the occasion with a goal, while Reece Burke returned from suspension and came close to opening the scoring.
Cornick did, though, with his eighth of the season, which move Luton up to ninth, three points off the play-offs, with a game in hand on sixth-placed Middlesbrough and that winner gifting them a solitary strike’s advantage in goal difference.
Jones told the BBC: “It’s a massive win. For me, these are as difficult a side to play against in term of trickiness and what they do.
“They dominate possession, they cause you problems and it’s very difficult to get the ball back, so you have to be organised, you have to aggressive and then you have to be really clinical when you get the opportunities and that’s what we were today.
“It’s a wonderful away performance. They had one chance in the first half when Sheasy made a great, great save. But you’re going to need your keep when you come away.
“Its a magnificent win to start the month, after the month that we’ve just had.”
