A new Luton business and skills hub named after Luton Town Football Club’s record appearance holder has welcomed his family for a special visit as a photo board has been unveiled celebrating his footballing legacy.
Morton House, located on Kimpton Road, is Luton Rising’s – the trading name for London Luton Airport Ltd – latest investment in local enterprise, innovation and employment. The facility was named in honour of Bob Morton, Luton Town’s all-time record appearance holder, following a collaboration with the club.
Morton’s widow, Mrs June Morton, and grandson Andre were recently given a private tour of the building, and shown a photo board in the reception, depicting Morton’s Luton career.
He played for the Hatters between 1946 and 1964, making 550 appearances and scoring 48 goals. He featured in the 1959 FA Cup final and played as both centre-forward and wing-half during his career.
Mrs Morton shared a poignant moment from their past during the visit, pointing to a photo of Bob walking onto the Kenilworth Road pitch. “That was our wedding day,” she said. “We beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in the afternoon.”
Luton Rising Deputy Chair, Cllr Javeria Hussain, said: “We will always be honoured that you allowed us to use Bob’s name here, where his status as a local legend can continue to inspire others.”
Morton House, once part of the Vauxhall estate, has been transformed into a contemporary space for business growth and skills development. The project was backed by growth funding from the former South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP), and is designed to drive inward investment and job creation in Luton.
The building is also home to Luton Council’s Adult Learning department, which aims to help 1,500 more residents each year access employment through its Passport to Employment Programme, focused on building both practical and social skills.
