Luton and Dunstable University Hospital has opened a new suite of theatres and a Planned Surgery Centre in its newly built Cedar Wing, providing a modern, purpose-built space for children needing surgery.
The centre includes a dedicated bay for young patients with eight individual pods, each assigned to a child before and after their operation. The design aims to make the experience smoother for families, with quicker admissions and discharges, and greater privacy and comfort.
Two-year-old Jayden was the first child to have surgery in the new facility and was all smiles as he gave a thumbs-up before heading into theatre. His operation was carried out by paediatric surgeon Mr Roy Gurprashad, who said it was “an absolute pleasure” to treat the hospital’s first young patient in the new theatres.
“I am so pleased to see how well and how quickly he’s recovering,” said Mr Gurprashad. “Having a dedicated area in the Planned Surgery Centre for our young patients is going to make a real difference to their experience in our hospital, and I look forward to being part of many more of their journeys.”
Jayden’s parents praised staff for their care and professionalism. “If I had to give a score out of 10, it would be above and beyond,” said his dad. “The staff have been brilliant, professional and kind – and it’s wonderful to see Jayden back to himself so quickly.”
His mum added: “We received such a warm welcome and the team made sure Jayden had fun before his surgery. Mr Gurprashad and the entire team have been great. Thank you so much.”
The new environment has been enhanced with calming wall art and interactive sensory games thanks to support from Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity.
Head of Charity Sarah Amexheta said: “Working alongside our Theatre and Paediatric teams, we recognised how important it is to create the right environment for our young patients.
“By transforming the reception and pods into calm, welcoming and age-appropriate spaces, we’ve made a real difference to their experience of care. We’re absolutely thrilled with the results and deeply grateful to everyone who supported this project.”
