Graeme Jones is looking at all markets as he seeks to sign reinforcements before the transfer window shuts on Friday night.
The Luton manager had previously said his priority in this window was players with Championship experience, but he signed Peter Kioso last week from National League Hartlepool United and now won’t rule out anything in this final week.
Asked if he was looking further down the leagues, Jones said: “Yeah. There are three or four League One players. People have gone to League One now who we identified. It’s really, competitive in the marketplace, financially.
“I want to keep my options open because I still think we need a couple through the door. We’ve got four or five days to do it.
“I can’t discredit the European market, the lower league market, the loan market.
“Sometimes things happen closer to the window and you have to be a little bit patient. I’d have liked them in at the beginning of the month, but we’ll see where we are come Friday evening.”
The transfer window has been difficult for Town, considering they’re operating on the smallest budget in the division. The gulf in spending power will be no more evident than tomorrow night’s home game against Derby County, who have signed Wayne Rooney on a reported weekly wage of £50,000.
Jones said: “From the outset we said we’d need help in a couple of positions. We’re still trying, but we won’t have any for Tuesday.
“We’re trying our best and there’s still four or five days left, but with the restrictions we’ve got financially, it’s not been straightforward.
“If you’re a super rich club in this league you can cherry pick. We have to think a bit differently and, so far, to no avail.”
Asked about whether he may look to sign more players on loan, the manager said: “I think we’ve got space for two more. Really, at best, I think that’s what we’d get.
“We wouldn’t be looking to send anybody back (from their loan). We just want to try to get a couple in, if we can.”
However, Jones didn’t rule out departures before Friday, saying: “I think we need to reduce the squad, is the truth. We’ve got a lot of numbers.”
With the transfer window set to shut at 11pm on Friday, Jones said: “I’m prepared for it. I’ll be here for whenever. If I have to catch up with the team late in the evening, then I will.
“It’s a really important period for the club. We’re trying to do the best we can. That’s all that matters, really.”
