Transfer news: ‘Wheels are in motion’ over Dewsbury-Hall but not Motherwell man

Luton would love to welcome Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall back for next season and boss Nathan Jones says things are “in motion”, but there is no interest in signing Motherwell midfielder Allan Campbell.

Town’s current Leicester loan midfielder has however been a near permanent fixture in the side and has expressed an interest in returning to Kenilworth Road after the summer.

Asked if the club would take him back, Jones said: “We’ve had thoughts about that from the day that he walked through the door, even before that.

“It’s a little bit out of our hands, but everything that we need to do is in motion, we’re never slow on the uptake to do certain things with our football club and the wheels are in motion to move us forward.

“When we recruit, not any more, we used to get something that was at the level, for example when we bought James Collins in League Two, Danny Hylton, we knew that they were finished articles at that level, we knew they were ones to get us promoted.

“But when we recruit we always recruit for levels above, so to do that, we can’t go out and spend £25-30million on a player that we think is ready for the level, so what we have to do is get people in that we feel, with work and time, and if they buy into everything, and if we support them and encourage them and teach them and work with them, then we can get them to that level.

“So, we knew that Kiernan was at a certain level and we knew the work that we do, if he bought into it, which he has done, tenfold, he would be a success here and he has been.

“For me he’s just consummate, he’s everything you’d want in a player, a lad, a pro, a human, fantastic. He’s been a wonderful addition and we don’t like taking loans here, but he’s why we do.”

However Jones quashed newspaper reports north of the border that Luton were trying to signing Motherwell’s Campbell.

Asked if the Scottish Under-21 midfielder was on his transfer radar, Jones said: “No, not at all. It’s wrong of me to speak of anyone else’s players and the boy is at Motherwell, so I know Graeme very well, but no, no interest in that.

“People will talk, people will try to generate interest, a lot of people have used our name because we are the type of club that likes to get people, so to generate interest, I would imagine someone has put that in the paper.”

Asked if he’s anticipating a busy summer in the transfer market, Jones said: “We don’t know. We want to strengthen, we want to get better. Every window we have gone into, we have come out stronger at this football club, I don’t think there is any exceptions.

“Without naming names, one January we made a fair few signings because we needed to and then the club got promoted quicker than the players we brought in. That wasn’t because we weren’t strong, it is just the club moved quickly and that is the good thing, that we moved quite quickly in five years so when you do that, players have to keep up and invariably you have to make sure the recruitment is on point.

“Whether it is busy or not, what we have to make sure is come August, that we are in a better position than we are now.”
