Graeme Jones would prefer to be concentrating solely on Saturday’s Championship trip to Cardiff, but will have to scour the transfer market for players that can help strengthen his Luton squad.
The Town manager is aiming to recruit up to three new players before the window shuts at 5pm and is hoping for a “busy time”, but he would rather the trading of players ceased once the season started last week.
Jones has already been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing six new players, breaking the club record fee with €1.5million goalkeeper Simon Sluga, and re-signing Kazenga LuaLua.
While Championship clubs voted in favour of retaining a shorter window, Jones would rather it was limited to before a ball is kicked, as is the case in the Premier League.
He said: “I think it definitely is a condensed period of really intense work. When I was a player, the window closed the last Thursday in March. You could sign players at any time, it definitely felt better.
“But I don’t set the rules. The season started, but I don’t think the transfer window should be going on. I think it should have been closed before the season started last week.
“But the powers that be set the rules and as it is, we have to adhere to them. We know the window closes tomorrow, and we need to be stronger than when we started. I think we are at this minute in time, but we need to be stronger again.
“I keep saying I’m a process man, so this week the process is to prepare the team for Cardiff and do as well in the transfer window, which is open for us to bring permanent signings in.
“Once Thursday goes I’m sure the focus will turn to Cardiff and, after that, elsewhere, I think you have to focus on what the priority is and that’s all I’ve been doing.”
Jones also confirmed that Town have not had to deal with any bids for their players.
