Linus Udofia’s dreams of the British crown were dealt a blow when he suffered a horrific-looking eye injury which forced a stoppage in his title fight eliminator against Kieron Conway at the Sheffield Arena.
Referee Howard Foster called off the contest in the sixth round with the Luton middleweight’s right eye swollen shut, also ending his bid for the vacant WBA Inter-Continental strap.
Fighting on the undercard of the WBA featherweight world title fight between Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington, it was Udofia’s second career defeat after losing in a clash for the then-vacant British belt against Denzel Bentley last year.
The 30-year-old posted a photo of the damage on social media afterwards, writing: ‘I’m OK, no fractures or breaks The ref made the right decision, my eye was shut, I felt I boxed to a T.. it’s boxing. We’ll be back.
“Thank you Kieran & @matchroomboxing for the opportunity & congratulations.
“We’ll be back, I love you all.”
