Luton’s student-run station Radio LaB has scooped three prizes at the Community Radio Awards, including the coveted Gold for Creative Radio of the Year.

The University of Bedfordshire-based station impressed judges with its inventive programming and innovative use of digital media, continuing its growing reputation for creativity and collaboration.

Its Gold-winning entry, a Halloween Murder Mystery, was a student-led production praised for its immersive storytelling. The station also picked up Silver in the same category for Choices: Deluxe Edition, a collaboration with the Collaborative Targeted Outreach Programme, and Bronze in Digital Content of the Year for its digital rebrand, which showcased a fresh strategy to engage listeners online.

Run entirely by student volunteers, Radio LaB offers hands-on experience in professional broadcast studios on the Luton campus, helping aspiring broadcasters build production and presenting skills.

Terry Lee, Senior Tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of the station, said: “These awards highlight that Radio LaB is where creativity and collaboration thrive. Our students gain real-world experience, build portfolios of work, and develop the skills and confidence to launch successful media careers. I’m proud of everyone involved in the shortlisted entries, and the students are already talking about submitting for next year’s awards!”

Radio & Audio student Danielle Foley, who led the Gold-winning Murder Mystery production, said: “I’m so thankful to everyone who helped bring our live Halloween Murder Mystery to life on Radio LaB. It was an incredible team effort in creative storytelling. Winning a Community Radio Award for it is truly an honour.”

The award success rounds off a strong year for the Luton station, which is also in the running for five national Student Radio Awards later this month.
