A student-run radio station based in Luton has been shortlisted for 11 national awards, highlighting what organisers say is the creativity and dedication of its volunteer team.

Radio LaB, the community station run by students at the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus, has been nominated across a wide range of categories at this year’s Amplify Awards. The awards, organised by the Student Radio Association, recognise the best student radio stations and broadcasters from across the UK.

The station has been shortlisted for awards including Best Station Culture, Most Improved Station and Moment of the Year for its “Destination #1” broadcast.

Individual nominations have also been secured by students Liam Wilmot and Tyrese Charles for Most Committed Member, while Emma Stigter has been nominated for the Resilience Award.

Several nominations recognise the station’s outreach and training work. Radio LaB has been shortlisted for Best Outreach Project for both its Black History Month programming and the EmpowerED Podcast, as well as Best Training Initiative for its Radio Growth 1-1 sessions and Best Training for its Residency DJ crash courses.

Danielle Foley, a Radio & Audio student and the station’s student manager, said the nominations were a testament to the whole team.

“I’m honoured to be the student manager of such an incredible team with this many shortlisted entries. 11 massive nominations across the field are cause for celebration. I’m so proud of everyone at Radio LaB, and good luck to all involved!” she said.

The recognition follows another successful year for the station, which won four awards at the Amplify Awards last year.

Radio LaB operates as a student-led community radio station from the university’s Luton campus, giving students the chance to produce programmes, present shows and manage live broadcasts using professional studio facilities.

Terry Lee, senior tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of Radio LaB, said the nominations showed the value of hands-on learning.

“Radio LaB is a truly student-led, community radio station that goes far beyond broadcasting,” he said, adding: We provide opportunities for students across the University to collaborate, create and develop professionally. These 11 nominations reflect our commitment to Career-Powered Education – ensuring students graduate with real-world experience and as part of a creative community.”

The winners will be announced at the Amplify Awards ceremony during the Student Radio Association Conference in Salford from April 13 to 15.
