Luton Town have confirmed that Liam Walsh’s red card in the 1-0 win over Coventry on Saturday has been overturned, paving the way for the midfielder to play a part in the final game of the season at West Bromwich Albion this weekend.
The 27-year-old was dismissed for a push on Luis Binks in the 68th minute of the Championship clash, but replays showed that Walsh had pushed the defender in the chest, while the City man dropped to the ground, clutching his face.
Referee Oliver Langford, who’d booked Walsh moments earlier, brandished a straight red card, which levelled up the teams after Coventry’s Jay Dasilva was sent off in the 13th minute. But being shown a straight red card instead of a second yellow allowed Luton to appeal and that has proved successful.
In a statement, the club said: “We are delighted to confirm that the Club’s appeal against midfielder Liam Walsh’s straight red card during last Saturday’s win over Coventry City has been upheld.
“A Football Association appeal hearing was held yesterday afternoon to rule on referee Oli Langford’s decision to dismiss the 27-year-old after Sky Blues defender Luis Binks went to ground in the 68th minute of the Town’s 1-0 victory at Kenilworth Road.”
An FA statement said: ‘Luton Town’s Liam Walsh will be available for their next five matches after a claim of wrongful dismissal was upheld by an independent Regulatory Commission. The midfielder was sent off for violent conduct on Saturday, 26 April, during their EFL Championship match against Coventry City.”
