A Carlton Morris penalty ensured a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town in Luton’s first public pre-season test ahead of their Premier League debut – 59 days after his spot-kick in the Luton’s Championship play-off shootout victory.

With construction ongoing to upgrade Kenilworth Road for their top-flight campaign, the Hatters’ friendly schedule is nomadic and they took on the Tractor Boys at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium.

Sporting their new home kit for the first time, the Hatters named a squad that included defender Tom Lockyer, whose last outing saw him collapse at Wembley with a heart problem and have to watch from a hospital bed as his team-mates booked their place in the big time.

There were also outings for summer signing Mads Andersen, Chiedozie Ogbene and Tahith Chong, though fellow new recruits Issa Kaboré and Marvelous Nakamba were absent, as were Gabriel Osho, Reece Burke, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Fred Onyedinma.

The Tractor Boys took the lead in the 14th minute when Nathan Broadhead’s cross evaded all heads and crept inside the far post, and the woodwork rattled just before half time when Sam Morsy saw a header hit the bar twice.

Ogbene raced into the penalty box on 74 minutes and was brought down, and Morris sent the stopper the wrong way to level. And that’s how the scores stayed.

Luton will next take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday (3pm).
