Kay Prosper beat Sam O’Maison at the iconic York Hall last night to win the English super-lightweight title at the second time of asking to become Luton’s first ever national champion.
The 10-round fight also doubled up as the British title eliminator so Special K is now mandatory for that vacant strap to his name.
The former Hockwell Ring ABC amateur had missed out to the Sheffield champion at the home of boxing back in March, with a controversial draw, but the 35-year-old took the rematch unanimously on points to claim his first professional title.
His reaction was captured on Twitter by his promoter Goodwin Boxing as Prosper held a glove over his face while the three judges’ scorecards – 96-94, 96-94, 97-94 – were read out, but he jumped for joy when MC Verity Panter announced those immortal words, “and the new…” were delivered.
Other videos of the magic moment were also posted on social media.
Luton’s former world champion Billy Schwer also congratulated Prosper.
