Louie Watson believes Luton are ready for the “next step” after the midfielder made his full Championship debut for the club and helped the Hatters force themselves into the play-off picture.
The 21-year-old was signed in the summer from Derby by former boss Nathan Jones, but it was under new manager Rob Edwards that he was handed his first league start, playing an impressive part in a 2-1 victory over Huddersfield to complete a perfect Christmas period of nine points out of nine.
The youngster made his EFL debut at former club Derby, but after a 21-point deduction last term the Rams were relegated to the third tier for the first time since 1986.
The Hatters on the other hand, reached the Championship play-offs and after the festive fixtures they’re right back in the mix, sitting just outside the top six on goal difference, with the visit of the in-form West Bromwich Albion to come tomorrow.
Jordan Clark is available once more and it was the midfielder’s calf strain that afforded Watson his opportunity. Whether the youngster keeps his place after two impressing outings remains to be seen, but Watson believes Luton they’re poised to improve on last season.
He said: “From top to bottom, everyone works at 100 per cent and the club is punching above their weight. This group is ready to do something special.
“Everyone is working at 100 per cent and they are ready to make that next step, so I think it’s important to continue the run, whether it’s in the cup or in the league. That winning mentality is the mentality that we need.
“Everyone here is ready for that next step, but it’s important that we show it in the position that we’re in. So, we’ve just got to continue what we are doing, do the basics well, do it right every day in training, in recoveries, in games, in the cup, in the league – it doesn’t matter.
“That’s what the team has in abundance. Everyone works at 100 per cent and that’s the most important part of it really.
“Coming here showed me how honest the group is. I think there are no individual people who want the limelight, everyone wants to share it and it shows in the performances. There are no individuals in this team, it is a team – and the boys, since I’ve been here, have been nothing but nice to me.
“I haven’t got a bad word to say about anyone, not the staff, nor the players, and it’s made it an easy transition.”
