Luton Town defender Amari’i Bell has issued an apology to supporters following the Hatters’ relegation to League One, admitting “we let you down” after a season that fell far short of expectations.
The Jamaican international posted his message on his Instagram account after Saturday’s 5-3 defeat at West Bromwich Albion, which consigned the club to a second successive relegation, having dropped out of the Premier League last year.
The 31-year-old centre-back has been a regular for Luton since joining in 2021. He played 33 times this term and was part of the side that won promotion to the top-flight last year.
“I think we all expected this season to go better than it did, but it didn’t go as planned,” Bell wrote.
“Everybody is hurting in the same way. Performances have been up and down and it wasn’t good enough for standards myself and the team have set in previous times.”
Luton’s demotion means they become only the fourth team to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One, and Bell acknowledged the pain supporters are feeling – emotions he insisted that the players share.
“You were with us right until the end and we let you down, no words can describe how sorry I am,” he said.
A summer of reflection stretches before Luton, with the club yet to release it’s retained list of players for next season’s return to League One.
“The club, town and fans are united through the badge and that’s where the power of a bounce back starts,” Bell said, adding: “It’s hard to see the picture when you’re standing in the frame, reflection is key.”
