We owe Brentford one, says Cornick after ‘horrible’ 7-0 rout that ‘scarred’ Luton

Striker Harry Cornick is eyeing some revenge over Brentford after the Championship high-flyers thumped Luton 7-0 in November at Griffin Park.

It was Town’s worst league defeat since 1966 and also saw playmaker Izzy Brown limp off with a hamstring injury that would keep him out for ten weeks, while Brendan Galloway was stretchered off with a season ending knee problem.

The Hatters slumped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat in a relegation six-pointer at Charlton on Saturday, slipping back to the bottom of the division, six points from safety and that has put even more onus on getting a positive result.

“I think we owe them one,” said Cornick, who said of the return fixture in west London: “It was a horrible afternoon for everyone involved.

“Everyone came away from that game sort of defeated. It scarred us a little bit, but we’re fighting strong now and we need to pick up points no matter who it’s against.”

The fourth-placed Bees will arrive at Kenilworth Road this evening on the back of three consecutive draws, but Cornick, who scored on Saturday, said: “We’ve got to treat every team the same and try to pick on their weaknesses.

“We know their strengths; we know they’re a good team and they’re an attacking threat. They’re pushing for promotion, but I think we can get some points there and, at home, I think we can beat anyone.

“I think we’ve shown that we’ve gone toe-to-toe with the best teams in the league and picked up points, so it’s a massive game.”

Town have yet to lose in six Championship contests under the lights at Kenilworth Road this term.

Cornick said: “I saw something the other day about Kenilworth Road being 98.3 per cent full, which is the most in the Championship. So, the fans have always been brilliant.

“We need them to keep coming to the away games and keep making Kenilworth Road a fortress.

“Any team that comes to Kenilworth Road, we need to think that we can pick up three points, no matter who it is. Then, our away games, we need to pick up points as well.

“It’s going to be a tough last 12 games because we know that in every game, we need to pick up points. We know that now.”
