West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer has revealed a move to Luton Town “just wasn’t right” which is why he turned down a move to the Premier League club.
The 27-year-old had a two-game spell on an emergency loan with the Hatters in March last year as the club were in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis following injuries to James Shea and then his emergency loan replacement, Jed Steer.
Last term, Luton brought in Ethan Horvath on loan for the season from Nottingham Forest, but opted not to buy the American in this summer window and have been on the hunt for keepers.
Town had been linked with Asmir Begovic, who joined QPR, and Manchester United’s Tom Heaton, and it was reported that a fee had been agreed with Albion for Palmer and talks had taken place.
Speaking to the Express and Star about why a move didn’t materialise, Palmer said: “Every player wants to play in the Premier League, but for me it just wasn’t right.
“Being so long here and to achieve being number one now, it’s something that was too soon to leave.
“I want to achieve promotion and get us back to the Premier League, that’s my ultimate dream, to achieve that with West Brom.
“It’s one of those ones, I’ve just got to make sure it’s not the last opportunity I get.
“I’ve got to keep working hard and my ultimate aim is to play in the Premier League, ideally with West Bromwich Albion.
“It’s nice to be recognised, but it’s down to a lot of people behind the scenes, especially those I came up with.”
