Jordan Clark says Luton’s squad need “roll their sleeves up” and start winning games under a new manager so they can still call themselves Championship players next term.
Rob Edwards’ successor is widely expected to be Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield, with reports claiming a deal is close to being agreed and some bookmakers suspending betting on the 40-year-old, who was their favourite for the job.
If it is to be Bloomfield, his first task will be to stop the rot of five straight defeats in all competitions and try to steer Town away from the second tier relegation zone, which is two points below them.
Preston North End are the visitors to Kenilworth Road on Saturday and until Norwich won 1-0 there on New Year’s Day, home form had kept the Hatters afloat, going six games unbeaten there.
“I think the club will definitely want to get done as quick as we can,” said Clark, who has admitted that the players had let down Edwards.
“Hopefully the new guy can come in and we get a full week, maybe with him, or at least a few days of training so he can implement his ideas and what he wants from us.
“We’ve got to roll our sleeves up and do what he asks and start winning some football games. It’s been a tough week, but we’ve just got to move on. It’s football, it’s what happens. As players, we want to be playing Championship football next year, so that’s our main aim.”
The incoming Luton manager will be the third that Clark has played under, having been signed by Nathan Jones in 2020.
The midfielder, who has been an almost ever-present under Edwards this term, playing in 24 of 26 league games, told the BBC: “I’m sure the club will appoint the right man, the right person and the right football man who will get the best out of us, like they’ve done in previous years.
“They seem to get it right all the time, so we look forward to it. It’s going to be a fresh start for every single player. There’s been a lot of lads who’ve maybe not played as much as they wanted to, but everyone’s on a fresh page now and we’ve got to stick together as a group.
“We’ve got a good group of lads in there and we know we should be doing better than what we are. It’s a fresh start for everyone and we’ve got to kick on, especially the back end of the season.”
After being knocked out of the FA Cup at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the 31-year-old added: “Even when Rob was there, we never didn’t try. It was just the fact that we had a bit of bad luck here and there and then we just weren’t good enough in games.
“Coming up against a Premier League side, who are flying, these games are easy to get up for. It’s when you’re struggling at the bottom of the Championship, and you’ve got to dig in each week and go Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday, whatever it is, this is when it’s going to count now.
“We don’t want to be in a position, in the next month or two, where we’re fighting relegation. We want to be at least safe and winning games of football because it’s been a while since we felt that feeling. We had a little bit at home but, like in the previous weeks, we’ve got to start finding that winning formula away from home.”
