Rob Edwards said his Luton side “left points out there” as they fell to defeat against ten-man Tottenham after missing a host of golden chances.
The Hatters rode their luck in the opening ten minutes where they could’ve been 3-0 down, but for poor finishing from Richarlison and two good saves from Thomas Kaminski.
And when Yves Bissouma tried to con referee John Brooks with a dive, having already been booked minutes earlier, Town found themselves with a man advantage.
But just seven minutes into the second half, they fell asleep at a corner and James Maddison teed up Micky van de Ven to bag the winner.
It came moments after Luton striker Elijah Adebayo, back in the starting line-up for the first time in five months, fluffed his lines was a gilt-edged chance at close quarters that was harder to miss than convert.
Edwards said: “We had a huge opportunity, a massive chance, which in the end we didn’t take and we’ve been punished for.
“We switched off with a short corner as well, those two moments are big in the game and then we huffed and puffed and tried, we had a couple of other big moments that we didn’t take, and I’m saying the same things at the moment.”
Chiedozie Ogbene, Jacob Brown and Cauley Woodrow all missed big chances to level as Luton, who bossed the second period with a man advantage, couldn’t force the ball in, just as had been the case as their previous two outings at Kenilworth Road against Burnley and Wolves.
Edwards said: “We’re saying the same things aren’t we at the moment, which is frustrating and I feel like we’ve left points out there today.”
In-between Bissouma’s two yellow cards, Town had a goal chalked off after Tom Lockyer followed up Adebayo’s up-and-under to nod in on the line, only to find that the strike had fould Cristian Romero in the build-up.
Edwards said: “I haven’t seen it, I’ve been told it was the correct decision, but not by my staff. But my staff didn’t come in raging and tell me it was incorrect.”
At that point, Edwards will have been plotting how to exploit their numerical advantage, which gave Town had a chance. Instead, Tottenham took their only one and it left Luton with a mountain to climb.
“They’re an elite team and just because they’re down to 10 men it doesn’t mean, right, just go on and win now Luton, its not that easy. That’s still hard for us as they’re very well-organised, but I do feel like we left points out there.”
