Luton heaped misery on their arch-rivals Watford with such a dominant demolition that Hornets boss Chris Wilder admitted Luton deserved victory and then claimed that his side do not play as a team.
Goals from Gabriel Osho and Allan Campbell ensured Town fans’ 17-year wait to welcome Watford to Kenilworth Road went as perfectly as possible.
The 2-0 victory sent Luton level on points with third-placed Middlesbrough and widened the gap between them and their Hertfordshire neighbours in 11th spot, while also opening up a 10-point buffer in the play-offs.
Wilder, who is trigger-happy Watford’s third boss of a chaotic season after Slaven Bilic and Luton’s Rob Edwards, said: “The best team won, that’s why they’re 12 points clear of where we are.
“That’s why they’ll be fighting for something at the end of the season, and if it’s going to be this between now and the end of the season it’s going to be mid-table obscurity really (for Watford). So no complaints about the result, they’ve got it going forward and we’re just stop-start.
“At times I see some really good things and at times I see some things that are head shaking moments.
“When I took the job and I looked at the players, I thought there’s some really good players individually, but trying to bring them together as a team is the hardest thing.
“And when the moments where we needed to step up to the plate and work as a team and play as a team, we didn’t.”
