Luton Town boss Jack Wilshere believes new signing Davy van den Berg can make an immediate impact after the attacking midfielder joined on loan from Dutch Eredivisie side Utrecht, with a conditional obligation to buy.
The 25-year-old former Netherlands youth international arrives with a strong pedigree in his homeland and European experience, something Wilshere feels will allow him to settle quickly into English football.
“Davy comes with a good pedigree in Dutch football, having won promotion to the Eredivisie and then playing regularly in that division over the past three seasons,” he told LTFC+
“He’s also got Europa League experience, playing in some big matches for Utrecht this season, so he’s one who can definitely come in and hit the ground running.”
Wilshere highlighted van den Berg’s attacking qualities as a key reason behind the move, suggesting the midfielder will offer something different to the Hatters’ options going forward.
“He’s an attacking midfielder with a lovely left foot, so he’ll bring something different to our squad. He’s capable of scoring some spectacular goals and I’m certain he’s a player who will have our fans on the edge of their seats,” the manager said.
The Luton boss also pointed to the timing of the deal, believing van den Berg arrives at the right point in his career to both contribute immediately and continue developing.
“Davy joins us at really good stage of his career, someone who can help us now and develop further with Luton. We’re delighted to get it over the line and are really looking forward to working with him.”
Van den Berg began his career in PSV Eindhoven’s academy before spells with Utrecht and PEC Zwolle, where he helped secure promotion back to the Eredivisie. He joins English football having featured in both the Dutch domestic and Europa League competitions this season, and Wilshere will hope that experience translates quickly at Kenilworth Road.
