Luton forward Cauley Woodrow has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan for the rest of the season to complete the Hatters’ busy January transfer window, which has included signing a raft of attacking players
The 30-year-old returned to Kenilworth Road in 2022 after 11 years away from the club where he graduated through the academy, making his debut as 16-year-old away at Welling United in the FA Trophy.
He joined Premier League Fulham in 2011 when Town were in the non-league for a much-needed six-figure fee. After moving to Barnsley, Woodrow returned to Luton, to help the Hatters win promotion to the Premier League.
His last-gasp winner against Norwich in former boss Rob Edwards’ first home game in charge on Boxing Day 2022, kick-started Town’s promotion push that saw them make history by becoming the first club ever to get promoted from the Conference to the top-flight of English football.
Woodrow leaves Luton with Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Tom Holmes, who made loan switches to Rotherham and Belgian Pro League side FCV Dender EH, respectively.
Town needed to trim their squad after bringing eight players to the club this transfer window, including attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard from Wigan and, today, striker Lasse Nordås from Tromsø, who would make Woodrow’s options further limited at Luton after making just one starting appearance in his 16 outings this term.
Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield told the club’s website: “Cauley is a proper Luton person and is another player with a long history with the club. He’s had quite a bit of interest during this transfer window and this opportunity was there for him.
“We discussed it with Cauley and we all decided it was the right thing for all parties for him to be able to go on loan and have that freshness of a chance at Blackburn.
“I’ve liked Cauley as a player for many years. I’ve really admired him and he’s an unbelievable person.
“He’s come on in a couple of games since we came in, but with Thelo [Aasgaard] and Lasse [Nordås] coming in, competition for places at the top of the pitch is going to be fierce, so the right thing for Cauley and the football club was for him to take this opportunity to go and play his football at Blackburn and we all wish him well.”
CEO Gary Sweet added: “We all wish the best for Cauley on his loan in Lancashire where I’m sure he will make an impact. His leadership and professionalism around The Brache will be sorely missed, but the most important thing for Cauley is a fresh opportunity as fresh faces are introduced at Kenilworth Road.”
