Jerry Yates has completed a loan move from Luton Town to Sheffield Wednesday for the remainder of the season, bringing an end to a difficult first campaign at Kenilworth Road.

The 29-year-old arrived from Derby County in the summer transfer window, for a reported seven-figure fee, with expectations high after his Championship pedigree, but his time in Bedfordshire never fully gathered momentum.

Yates made 29 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven times, although his opportunities became increasingly limited as the season progressed and Hatters manager Jack Wilshere looked elsewhere for attacking solutions.

Having started the campaign as a regular under former boss Matt Bloomfield, Yates slipped down the pecking order and he was absent from Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield, when midfielder Jordan Clark was deployed as a false number nine.

Yates links up with a Sheffield Wednesday side battling what appears to be an almost inevitable relegation from the Championship, with the Owls currently propping up the table after points deductions.

He could be thrown straight into the action, with Wednesday hosting Wrexham in a lunchtime kick-off tomorrow as they search for goals and a lift in fortunes.
