Luton’s Zack Nelson has been called up to the England Elite League squad (U20s) for the first time as a replacement for Tottenham Hotspur’s Alfie Devine, who has withdrawn from the squad.

The Hatters Academy product will join up with his Town team-mate Reuell Walters for games against Turkey in Istanbul on Friday (6 September, 5pm) and Romania at Stockport’s Edgeley Park on Tuesday 7pm.

It marks an impressive year for the 19-year-old, who last term made his Premier League debut for the Hatters and then, this campaign, made his full bow in the Championship curtain-raiser against Burnley, before scoring his first senior goal in the Carabao Cup defeat to QPR last week.

It total, Nelson has featured in four of Luton’s five games this season. Back in July Hatters manager Rob Edwards said of Nelson: “He’s a talented player and I really hope that he can make an impact this year. We’re challenging him to do that. I think he’s an exciting one for the future.”

Last month, fellow academy graduate Joe Johnson was also called up for the first time for England Under-19 duty, having played in the 2023 under-17 World Cup and then earning caps for the under-18s in the Tri-Nations tournament earlier this year.

The defender will be in the England squad for three friendlies against Italy (September 4), Croatia (September 7) and Germany (September 10), all out in Croatia.

  • Last night, Luton’s Under-21s continued their unbeaten season, beating Glasgow Rangers 3-2 in a friendly at Kenilworth Road.

Jack Lorentzen-Jones bagged a first-half brace, including one from the penalty spot, after the Scottish side took the lead through Christopher Eadie.

Charlie Trustram edged Alex Lawless’ side ahead further ahead in the second half before Archie Stevens pulled one back for Rangers.
