Luton suffered a 1-0 defeat to league leaders Burnley on Saturday in a scoreline which barely scratched the surface of what went on, though there was plenty to show Town’s best sides. Here are our takeaways from the game and the day.
Pelly keeps getting better
There are plenty of reasons that every Luton manager since John Still has declared their love for Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, but under the tutelage of Rob Edwards there’s a case to make that the midfielder is playing some of his finest stuff for the club.
What he does on a consistent basis is provide the fire in the engine room that allows Town to play with such high intensity and that, sadly, can often go unnoticed.
But against Burnley, his was the standout performance that not even the prawn sandwich brigade in charge of the sometimes seemingly sozzled sponsors’ man-of-the-match award could mistake for anything other than top drawer.
Pelly was part of an impressive trio that made their counterparts in the ranks of the runaway league leaders look anything but Premier League destined. Don’t let the scoreline – not helped by Elijah Adebayo scuffing wide his move of the match – dampen your appreciation for his work. He was here, there and everywhere.
At 356 games over nine years and counting, Pelly is still getting better and better.
Penalty scourge belies Town’s miserly defence
You know the stats by now, Luton have conceded a penalty in each of their last three games and they’ve realistically cost Town five points in the process.
That hat-trick of misfortune has also propelled up to second in the Championship table for spot-kick giveaways, of which Ethan Horvath has saved zero. The American didn’t get close to Ashley Barnes’ winner and that must sting, not least because he was barely tested, save for a first-half Johann Gudmundsson 25-yard free-kick.
But it’s not just against Barnsley that Town, in open play at least, have shut up shop. If you take the last three penalties out of the equation, Luton have not conceded in open play for the last five Championship games.
Boss Rob Edwards said of that fact: “It says that we’re difficult to break down. They weren’t able to really cut through us. The best team in the league, who do that pretty regularly to teams, weren’t able to create those big chances. From front to back, we’re difficult to break down and we’ve got to keep that going.”
Oh no, not Osho again
Gabriel Osho is the unfortunate defender to have conceded two of those three penalties, and while you can say the one at Coventry was rash, it was unfortunate against Burnley.
The former Reading youth said: “The way I remember was it was just flicked over someone’s head and then the guys kind of flicked it back towards me as I’m running towards him.
“I mean if my hand’s out wide then I understand, but from what I remember my hand was just literally by my side and he was about a yard away.
“It just kind of sums up what’s happening with me at the moment, but it’s all right, we’ve just got to keep trusting the process really and keep going.”
You could sense social media queuing up to criticise the defender, but that would be harsh on his overall performance, which was stingy in defence but then brave and bold with the ball at his feet.
One of these days, Town will get a penalty-free outing and Osho may just get the praise he deserves.
We were all Lockyer when he lost it, weren’t we?
Whether Town can keep it tight at Birmingham on Saturday, may have a lot to do with the loss of Tom Lockyer to suspension.
In a similar way to the handball cancelling out – for some spectators – the good work of Gabriel Osho, the dissent of his skipper towards red-card branding referee Jeremy Simpson over that decision will overshadow just what a dominant defender the Welsh international has become. And let’s be honest, he was only doing on the pitch what we were all doing from the stands. His was a reaction that was the culmination of umpteen infuriating decisions from officials all season.
Before that, aerially and positionally, Lockyer was imperious and where he really showed his ability was his calmness on the ball, even as the last man, to faint past attackers, or drop his shoulder and leave them chasing shadows. But then his positivity to pick out a useful pass, is another reason, Luton played the majority of the game on the front foot.
He’ll be a big miss at St Andrew’s, but Luton’s revolving cast of defenders have shown often enough this term that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
Put your hands together for the Kenny crowd
Aside from the final whistle “1-0 to the referee” pelters reserved for man in black Jeremy Simpson, the mood lifted when the Luton players exited down the tunnel after a lap of appreciation that was more than reciprocated by the sell-out Kenilworth Road contingent.
During the game, they’d been their vociferous best – an output that Burnley boss Vincent Company was full of praise for – but with so many staying behind to applaud the efforts of their team and the manager it was a really harmonious sense of the battle being harshly lost but a war which is still there to be won. And, long-term for the Edwards era, that’s hugely encouraging.
The kids are alright
Those that dashed away for a half-time pint and a pie might have missed Luton’s all-conquering Under-18 side being presented with their EFL Youth Alliance South-East Division title, managed by former first-team favourite Alan McCormack and assisted by Alex Lawless. Full credit to them all. Plus it shows that right throughout the club, there’s a big ol’ plan that’s coming together.

I dont know where this fake news of Pelly is getting better comes from? Sofascore and other such independent player rating systems do have him coming from the lowest scoring midfielder in the division to someone who has slighly improved his performance from a really poor start this year. Alfie Doughty was brilliant and our best player I thought. Marvelous Nakamba put in a shift as good as Pelly too.
Stats aren’t everything – as seemingly underlined by NJ’s unfortunate time at Southampton. Where Pelly’s concerned, the manager sees the bigger picture. And Alfie Doughty? A star in the making!
