Lutonians lined the streets and packed into Wardown Park as the town’s famous carnival celebrated its 50th anniversary in spectacular style.
The golden anniversary event saw vibrant costumes, music, dancing and community groups fill the town centre before the parade made its way to Wardown Park, where a packed programme of performances, food and family entertainment continued throughout the day.
This year’s carnival also marked a return to Wardown Park, the original home of the event, as organisers celebrated half a century of one of Luton’s most cherished community traditions.
Among those taking part and reacting to the celebrations was Luton South MP Rachel Hopkins, who reflected on her own connection to the carnival.
She wrote on social media: “Fantastic to be part of the Luton Carnival parade on its 50th anniversary! Carnival is all about our Luton community coming out to have fun, dance and share good vibes! One town, one love, no place for hate.
“As a child I was at the very first Carnival and have enjoyed so many great days come rain or shine (IYKYK!) over the years. Well done to everyone involved who made this year’s Golden anniversary such a brilliant celebration.”
Luton North MP Sarah Owen described the event on her social channels as a showcase of the town at its best.
She said: “Luton Carnival was big, bold, brilliant and inclusive – Luton at its best. Well done to everyone involved, especially the school children.”
Organisers, the UK Centre for Carnival Arts, thanked everyone who helped make the milestone event a success.
In a statement during the celebrations, they said: “A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us so far to celebrate 50 golden years of Luton Carnival.
“From the moment we set off from the town centre, down the road to Wardown Park, the atmosphere was electric. From the vibrant parade to the music, dancing, food and family activities — you’ve made today truly special.”
In a further message shared after the event, organisers added: “THE VIBES AT LUTON CARNIVAL WERE UNMATCHED!
“Wardown Park was alive with music, colour, culture and community as thousands came together to celebrate 50 years of Luton Carnival.
“From incredible performances and spectacular costumes to delicious food and non-stop entertainment, the energy today was absolutely amazing.”
Founded in 1976, Luton Carnival has grown into one of the UK’s largest one-day carnivals and remains one of the biggest dates in the town’s cultural calendar.
