Luton Airport has unveiled a new consolidation centre expected to create up to 30 jobs for local people as part of wider £11.5million redevelopment plans that will eventually create five times as many jobs.
The new facility, which will support the airport’s shops and restaurants, has been built inside one of three former Monarch Airlines hangars acquired by the airport in 2024.
Airport bosses say the centre will create up to 30 jobs and improve the way goods are delivered and distributed across the terminal.
The site will handle hundreds of thousands of retail deliveries each year, combining goods from multiple suppliers before they are transported to more than 50 airport shops and restaurants. Consolidated deliveries will then be made using lower-carbon HVO-powered vehicles in an effort to reduce traffic and emissions across the airport campus.
The wider refurbishment programme, which is expected to create up to 150 jobs, will also see the remaining two empty hangars converted into aircraft engineering and maintenance facilities, alongside an easyJet apprenticeship training campus for trainee engineers.
Alberto Martin, chief executive of Luton Airport, said: “The launch of this new consolidation centre demonstrates London Luton Airport’s commitment to supporting our local economy and creating new employment opportunities for people in our neighbouring communities. The investment is also a fantastic example of our collaborative relationship with the airport owner Luton Rising, and how we can work together to deliver tangible benefits for local people and the growing network of local businesses that make up our supply chain.
“The facility provides the airport with an even more efficient, resilient and scalable platform to receive and consolidate thousands of goods, from soap to sauces, on behalf of the growing number of shops and restaurants that our passengers can now enjoy across the terminal.”
The centre will be operated by GXO Logistics, which specialises in large-scale supply chain and transport operations.
