Luton Community Fire Station has marked its 70th anniversary with a celebration honouring generations of firefighters who have served and protected the town.

Current and former staff, their families and local dignitaries gathered at the Studley Road station on Saturday to celebrate the milestone ahead of the anniversary itself yesterday, reflecting on decades of service while also looking ahead to plans for a new fire station on the same site.

Guests shared memories of working at the station, the friendships formed during their careers and the role crews have played in the community over the past seven decades. Firefighters also gave tours of fire engines and the station, offering visitors an insight into life on the frontline in 2026.

During the event, the Chair of the Fire Authority, Jacqui Burnett, presented a commemorative plaque to Luton Station Commander Mike King to mark the occasion.

Cllr Burnett said: “As we mark 70 years of Luton Fire Station, there is one word that comes to mind, and that is duty. All of those who joined us on Saturday, and all of those who have passed through this station in the 70 years have lived it and demonstrated it every day of their working life, and I thank you, on behalf of the community. Thank you for what you have done in the past, do today, and what you will do for years to come.

“As we reflect on the legacy of Luton Fire Station, we also look to the future with confidence and excitement as we shift our focus to building a new fire station on the same Studley Road site that is fit for a modern-day fire service.”

Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson said the anniversary was about much more than the building itself.

“It was a privilege to celebrate 70 years of Luton Community Fire Station, although this milestone is about far more than a building. It is about the people who have served here, the communities they have protected, and the generations of staff, volunteers and partners who have made this station the heart of the community.

“The stories and memories shared during the event were a powerful reminder of the station’s proud history and the impact our crews have had on countless lives over the past seven decades. They answer those calls at all hours of the day and night, often placing themselves in harm’s way to help others, and they do so, time and time again, with professionalism, courage and compassion.”
