Opinion: The old Luton blueprint is back – and Palmer proves it

New signing, new kit, old Luton? What a wonderful weekend!

All capped off of course by an England win in the early hours of Monday morning, but before that we had the unveiling of a new kit, the confirmation of the signing we all wanted and dare I say it, a return of the old Luton?

I constantly refer to what we did as a club on the way through the leagues the right way because the plan was so clear and worked so well, but it has felt like we have come away from that successful recipe in recent seasons.

One of the things we did so well back then was make our statement signings early in the transfer window and that is now two of them who have come in already, and pre-season is only a matter of days old.

Those signings tended to be players not just to excel at the level we were about to play at but also ones who would be able to take the club up a division and still offer something.

Players like James Collins, Danny Hylton, Andrew Shinnie, Carlton Morris and plenty more were all brought to the club with above the level ability and with the aim of taking us up the food chain.

George Johnston and Kasey Palmer are very much signings in that mould. The former has just won promotion from this division while the latter highlighted every time he took to the pitch for us last term that his ability levels soar far higher than League One standards.

Just having Palmer secured permanently and early so that he can have a full pre-season is everything that most Luton fans wanted. You’ll go a long way to find someone of a Hatters persuasion who didn’t enjoy watching the Jamaica international last term, so the prospect of getting to do that again feels very exciting.

Add to it improved communication, a manager who seems driven and determined to be successful and the arrival of a man whose role is to make the move to Power Court a success – Barry Webber – and it might just be the time to be optimistic and hopeful again after a tough couple of years!

It has been a great start to the summer. I’m keenly looking forward to discover what comes next.

Oh and that kit – absolute banger!
