Luton assistant manager Chris Powell admits the Hatters must become more dangerous in the final third if they are to achieve their League One promotion ambitions.
Town dominated possession for long spells during Thursday night’s 2-1 defeat at Stevenage but struggled to turn that control into enough clear-cut opportunities as they slipped to their second successive defeat on the road in the third tier.
Strikers have scored for the Hatters this term, with Nahki Wells on five goals in eight games, while summer signing Callum Marshall bagged two stunners in his first two home games.
The former West Ham youth had one shot earlier in the game against Stevenage but then the chances dried up until Kasey Palmer’s shot deflected in off Mads Andersen in the 75th minute. But with time push on from there in search of an equalising goal that might have earned a point, Luton failed to create another meaningful chance.
Powell believes the problem is something Luton must address on the training pitch, with nine days between their next game at home to Bradford City on Saturday, and he insists the squad contains enough goalscorers and creative players to produce more.
Bradford have the most miserly defence in the division, having conceded just four goals, and asked if there needs to be more movement up front to create chances, Powell said Town need to, “Work at it.”
He added: “That’s one thing we’re not shy of. Jack will look at the games and we work hard in training. We have to get better there because we’ve got goalscorers, got people that can create, got people that can score, not only Nahki but young Callum who have both done really well of late.
“If we want to get to where we want to get to, we’ve got to create more chances. We did at the weekend, when you look at the Orient game it was very similar this evening [against Stevenage].
“I can’t really remember Josh Keeley making a save. On the balance of play you’re looking to maybe take something from this. We’ll have to dust ourselves down and see what the weekend brings.”
The Bradford game will come after a period of six games in 19 days and Powell said: “It’s been a tough schedule for everyone. We’ve got to be ready and get ready a tough game against Bradford.”
