Luton did explore the possibility of signing Arsenal youngster Max Dowman on loan, according to Hatters senior scout and club ambassador Mick Harford.
The 16-year-old has emerged as one of English football’s most exciting young talents and caught the eye again this week by scoring twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town.
Dowman has now scored three goals in 14 first-team appearances for the Gunners since making his senior debut in August 2025.
His performances have also attracted interest from Luton, with Harford revealing that manager Jack Wilshere had spoken directly to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta about bringing the teenager to Kenilworth Road.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Harford was asked about Luton potentially signing Dowman and said: “I think Jack’s asked him a couple of times, Mikel, but I don’t think he’ll be going out on loan.”
Dowman is a player Wilshere knows particularly well having coached him while in charge of Arsenal’s Under-18s.
The youngster made 12 appearances under Wilshere, scoring twice and providing seven assists during their time together at Hale End.
Harford believes there are similarities between Dowman’s emergence and Wilshere’s own development at Arsenal, afer the Luton boss made his Gunners debut at 16 as well.
“Jack was a wonderful footballer, he still is on the training ground,” Harford said. “He started, not as a wide man, but as a wide man tucking in those little pockets, getting on the ball and creating stuff.
“Dowman looks more of a wide man than a pocket player, but a wonderful talent. I think he will get more game time and I think if he produces, I think Arteta will play him.
“I’m a believer in if you’re ready, I don’t care what age you are. If you’re good enough, you’ll play and I’m sure he will. He looks like he’s going to be a superstar.”
