People in Luton can now access free mental health support around the clock through a new NHS-funded service offering help by text message, WhatsApp and online chat.
The Crisis Text Support Service connects children, young people and adults with trained mental health professionals, providing an alternative for those who find it difficult to speak about their feelings over the phone or face to face.
It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can support people experiencing anxiety, loneliness, overwhelming thoughts or anyone who simply needs someone to listen.
Dr Fiona Head, medical director for NHS Central East ICB, said the service would give people another way to seek help when they need it.
She said: “We want to make sure the mental health services we commission reflect the needs of our local communities, so people can get the right support, at the right time and in a way that works for them. That means offering a range of services that recognise people may want to seek help in different ways.
“This new service gives people another important option alongside existing mental health services, offering greater choice and helping them get the care and support that’s right for them when they need it.”
The service is staffed entirely by registered health and care professionals with experience in areas including psychology, counselling, social work and mental health nursing.
Responders are trained in safeguarding, crisis intervention and therapeutic approaches. They can assess people’s needs, help develop safety plans and connect them with appropriate local mental health services and specialist care.
People in Luton can access the service in three ways:
- Text message: Send ‘SOS’ to 80899.
- WhatsApp: Message 0800 884 0655.
- Online chat: Visit nxgthrive.co.uk/crisis-text-service.
The online chat also has real-time translation tools, allowing responders to communicate with people in their first language.
