Elijah Adebayo will miss the remainder of the season, after undergoing surgery on a hip injury suffered in just his second appearance since returning from almost a year out recovering from damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

The striker suffered the serious knee injury in May last year and had to go under the knife, leading to a long recovery period, but after 11 months out he finally made his long-awaited return as a substitute in the 2-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers earlier this month, which ended Town’s miserable ten-game run without victory on the road.

The forward then made his home return a few days later, again off the bench in the 3-2 triumph over Exeter City. However, he appeared to injure himself during that 15-minute cameo and though he completed the game, he was sent for tests to assess the damage.

The results have led to surgery yesterday which has, for the second season in a row, ruled him out of Luton’s league run-in. It is understood that the striker is also out on contract at the end of the campaign, so it remains to be seen whether a new deal will be offered.

Manager Jack Wilshere told LTFC+: “We are all devastated for Eli because we’ve seen how much he’s put in, both physically and emotionally, to get back playing this season and help us out on the pitch.

“He’s been a massive support for me in my early months here off the pitch, with the way he’s conducted himself around the training ground and getting involved on a matchday in the weeks leading up to his return, and then helping us see out the two wins last week.

“I know from personal experience what it’s like to suffer injuries so soon after coming back, and it’s just such bad luck that this has happened when Eli had so much to look forward to with the team over the coming weeks.

“We’ll all get around him and support him, as I know he will continue to do for the rest of the lads too, as he’s been such a big part of this club’s recent history and the positive environment we are trying to build.”
